Girl, 13, left in coma after she was 'dropped on her head' at school is 'strongest' as sister gives update

A schoolgirl who was allegedly 'dropped on her head' in the playground and had to be placed in an induced coma has taken her first few steps.

Neeka Atkinson suffered a brain injury on Friday, July 8 at a school in Hull after she was allegedly dropped head first onto a concrete floor. She was rushed to hospital from the Archbishop Sentamu Academy after she started fitting.

The 13-year-old was put into a coma and a CT scan revealed she had a blood clot in her brain. After undergoing a lengthy operation, Neeka was in a stable condition but the left side of her body was paralysed and she struggled to speak.

Police are investigating the incident and arrested a teenage boy, who was subsequently released on bail. Neeka is now on a long road to recovery and has managed to take her first few steps, her family said.

Her sister Alisha Atkinson shared an update on social media, describing her as the 'strongest little girl', Hull Live reports. Alongside a picture of herself with a smiling Neeka, she said: "Neeka’s started physio this week and she’s taking a few steps on her own and is slowly coming to terms with what’s happened.

"She’s got such a great spirit for someone that’s been through something like this, but her recovery is still a very long process and she still has a lot of battles to overcome. I couldn’t be more prouder of her for her determination and the way she’s handling the mental side of things too, she’s honestly the strongest little girl I’ve ever met and I’ll do anything to keep that smile on her face, I love you Neeka."

Her family set up a fundraiser when they were advised that Neeka would need to be transferred to a Leeds hospital to meet her new needs.

Neeka's nan would need to temporarily relocate to Leeds to make sure she could be there for her granddaughter and extra cash would be needed to rehabilitate the young teen once she returns home. The original fundraising target of £5,000 has been smashed as the people of Hull and East Yorkshire take the recovery of Neeka to their hearts.
