Girl, 13, charged with arson over blaze at high rise flats

A 13-year-old girl has been charged with arson over a fire at a block of flats in Liverpool city centre.

Firefighters had to use specialist breathing equipment to tackle the blaze on the sixth floor of a high rise building on Hatton Garden.

The site was evacuated and the road cordoned off as a precaution while five crews dealt with the incident.

A teenager from Liverpool has been accused of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and is due to appear before magistrates.

The 13-year-old, from Liverpool, is alleged to have started a fire within an apartment in the high rise on August 4.

Emergency services had initially attended the site due to concerns for the safety of a girl.

Merseyside Police told the ECHO: "Emergency services attended Hatton Garden in Liverpool city centre after concerns for the safety of a 13-year-old girl.

"Officers attended following a report that the girl, who was inside a premises on the street, was threatening to harm herself, just before 2.30pm.

"It was further reported that a fire had been started, and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended."

No-one was injured in the fire, which led to ventilation work on the property and safety checks at neighbouring flats.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service added: "On arrival crews found a fire in the kitchen of a flat on the sixth floor of the building.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property under rapid deployment to prevent further escalation. Crews used a CO2 extinguisher as well as the dry riser to tackle the fire."
