Girl, 13, almost died thanks to bath bomb

The family of a teenage girl are campaigning for a change in the law after she almost died because of a bath bomb.

Around 25,000 people have already signed a petition backing the call for new legislation, reports BirminghamLive.

Emelia Brain, then 13, had to be rushed to hospital in an ambulance after suffering a reaction to a bath bomb in January this year,

Emelia screamed for her parents after getting into a bath containing a bath bomb she had received as a Christmas present.

Emelia had missed the fact that the product contained milk - to which she is severely allergic.

Paramedics arrived within five minutes and gave Emelia shots of antihistamine and adrenaline before taking her to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

Mum Maria previously said: "What if we have been downstairs with the door shut? She could have been in the house by herself. I don't think she would have stood a chance. The reaction was so fast because she was ingesting the steam.

"That is the scary thing. It doesn't bear thinking about. I had gone to bed when she got into the bath.

"Within a minute and a half, she let out this cry for help. I knew she was in trouble. She couldn't breathe.

"She had had an allergic reaction before, but this was different."

Emelia' has now made a full recovery and the family is campaigning for Parliament to make it a legal requirement to display allergens in bold on beauty products.

They are also calling for labels to contain plain English and not Latin names to ensure that people can easily understand them.

"It was labelled legally, but it wasn't in bold," Maria said. "For Emelia looking at it she thought she checked them all.

"For a 13-year-old it didn't stand out. You had to squint to see it. What does it take the change to happen in the law?" asked Maria, adding: "Is it going to take a tragedy?"
