Girl, 12, savaged by shark on beach holiday needed 42 stitches after horror attack

A 12-year-old was left needing 42 stitches after being savaged by a shark.

Jordan Prushinski was on holiday with her family at the Ocean City beach in Maryland, US on Monday when the freak attack that left her with 20 cuts occurred.

The teenager said she was in the water when she was attacked by what doctors believe was a shark.

Jordan described how she was enjoying her time on the sandy beach when she got into knee-deep water and went swimming.

A wave then crashed and she felt what she thought was a horseshoe crab "hitting against my shins".

"I don’t like the sea creatures so I rushed out immediately to find blood everywhere, with cuts all over my left leg,” she said.

“I didn’t really realize what was going on until I was on the beach and I was bleeding everywhere,” Jordan said, according to NBC affiliate WBRE-TV.

Her horrified mum Melissa rushed to help her daughter, as did other beachgoers, including an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and a nurse.

The teenager was then given first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Dad Robert praised the crowd who helped his daughter as she emerged from the attack, saying they made a difference.

“Lifeguards and everybody else that were helping, were fantastic. By the time I got there, I scooped her up and got her onto a quad and got her out of there," the grateful dad said.

According to Mrs Prushinski, the ER doctor "confirmed it was a shark bite because no other animal makes this type of bite".

The type of shark responsible for the horror attack, however, isn't known.
