A 12-year-old girl was hit by a car after the man driving it was shot in the face in Liverpool.

The girl was out trick or treating when she was hit by the car and dragged underneath the vehicle on Sceptre Road in Croxteth on Thursday evening (October 31).

The 22-year-old driver was trying to flee after he was shot in the face in a targeted attack.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been released under investigation, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The girl suffered injuries to her skull, back and spine and is currently receiving treatment at Alder Hey Childrens' Hospital, where she is in a stable condition.

Witnesses told how six women, including the girl's auntie, helped lift the vehicle and free the injured trick or treater trapped underneath.

The driver, who left the vehicle covered in blood, waited by the roadside until the girl's family arrived.

Merseyside Police said enquiries into the incident were continuing.

Anyone with information should call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting log 977 of October 31.
