An 11-year-old girl was rushed to hospital with a pencil lodged in her neck after falling onto it at school.
The pupil had fallen over during break time and lodged the sharpened end of the pencil into the left side of her neck.
With the pencil kept in place, she was taken to a health centre by ambulance before being transferred to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.
A shocking photograph below shows the girl's neck with the pencil sticking out of the side of it.
A medical report into the incident on the BMJ titled 'Penetrating paediatric neck trauma' said: "On initial examination, there was a pencil protruding from the left side of the neck with no external bleeding or haematoma from the puncture site.

The report said this showed the pencil was lodged in her left common carotid artery (CCA) causing total blockage.
She underwent surgery to remove the pencil carefully.
Reports said the girl was discharged and allowed home two days after the surgery but was monitored afterwards and had regular ultrasounds.
