Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Rangers recruitment questioned as pundit surprised by lack of Dutch stars

Giovanni van Bronckhorst knows his homeland's football well - and that's why there's some surprise over a lack of Dutch signings at Rangers.

The Ibrox boss' recruitment alongside sporting director Ross Wilson has come under scrutiny amid slow starts to the campaign for many of their new faces. Antonio Colak has been a hit since arriving from PAOK and Tom Lawrence started well too before injury hit.

However, Ben Davies and John Souttar have also had injury problems while Malik Tillman has blown hot and cold. Ridvan Yilmaz and Rabbi Matondo have both struggled for regular minutes. Sky Sports commentator and former Scotland international Andy Walker has been left surprised that despite fresh faces being introduced, none of them were from van Bronckhorst's Netherlands, as that is where in his opinion one of the Rangers boss' key player knowledge areas lie. Backroom staff members Roy Makaay, Dave Vos and Yori Bosschaart all hail from the Netherlands and Walker reckons it's a market which has previously been fruitful for Celtic with Virgil Van Dijk, now at Liverpool.

He told Go Radio: "I'm just surprised there's no Dutch involvement in the 25-man squad he's got. It is a surprise a Dutch manager hasn't got a Dutch player.

"You would think he would know someone. I remember doing a Scotland U21s game years ago and John Park was there (as a scout) for Celtic.

"Virgil Van Dijk was playing for Holland and not so long after that he was playing for Celtic. Quincy Promes was also playing I think and he moved to Spartak Moscow.

"I just think a Dutch manager who has played at the highest level, knowing all the coaches... you would think he would be able to spot someone who would come over and make a difference."
