Giovanni van Bronckhorst Rangers press conference in full as he demands underperforming stars 'get the zero'

Giovanni van Bronckhorst says a clean sheet is the main focus for Rangers tomorrow against Sparta Prague in his first game as Ibrox boss.

The Dutchman will take charge of his maiden match as successor to Steven Gerrard on Thursday during a pressure cooker Europa League contest.

Both Rangers and Sparta are on four points in Group A and an away victory at Ibrox would all but seal a knockout spot after Christmas for the Czechs.

A home win, however, would put Rangers in the driving seat and and could guarantee European football of some kind after the festive period.

They'll go into the game wounded by Sunday's 3-1 Premier Sports Cup semi-final loss to Hibs, and GvB says defensive improvement is needed.

Van Bronckhorst said: "I feel the players are ready. Of course it is a new start for them with me coming in as the new manager.

"They are disappointed with the game at the weekend but they have worked hard in training. They look sharp which is what we need. We still want to be in Europe after Christmas.

"We need that hunger every game. You need that to achieve success in every game. It's a home game in Europe and those are always great nights at Ibrox.

"We need to create an atmosphere with the supporters in the stands which should hopefully allow us to play well. We need to be much more focused in defence.

"We need to be more compact. The defending part of the game is for everyone. The main objective tomorrow is to make sure we keep a clean sheet and get the zero.

"We are preparing the boys well for the game tomorrow and we take the last game into notice. I saw some things in the game where I felt that we need to improve.

"All that will be mind to help us prepare for tomorrow. We are looking forward but if we can improve things, then I will take that into account.

"We have to prepare for the next opponents tactically on how we want to get the ball back and how we want to play with it."
