Giovanni van Bronckhorst Rangers half time decision blasted as Kevin Thomson fumes at dressing room absence

Former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson believes new Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have intervened as his side slumped to a 3-1 Premier Sports Cup semi-final defeat to Hibs.

The Dutchman's reign in Glasgow officially begins on Monday but he watched from the stands as Rangers crumbled under League Cup pressure at Hampden.

Martin Boyle's first half hat-trick put Hibs in an unassailable position and Scott Arfield 's goal only proved a consolation for the Govan outfit, who were managed on the day by B team boss David McCallum.

GvB's work permit was received before kick-off, which meant he could have intervened in the half-time team talk, but the 46-year-old opted to stay in the stand.

Thomson - who currently manages League Two table toppers Kelty Hearts - says he'd have been on top of his players after some calamitous first half defending.

"In my opinion I would have been waiting for them at half-time," said Thomson during a debate on Premier Sports.

"This team needed a reaction and I'm not so sure David McCallum is the man to give them that.

"If I was van Bronckhorst I would have been in there waiting for them.

"Rangers just look vulnerable when it comes down the side and with balls in the box.

"They are vulnerable at the back Rangers, which is the opposite of what they were last year. They conceded very few goals and were really solid.

"Now this season, for whatever reason, the back four are not on the same wavelength and they look really disjointed. Hibs exploited them."
