Giovanni van Bronckhorst certain Rangers can overcome Celtic title hurdle amid 'new era' of Ibrox success

Former Rangers hero Giovanni van Bronckhorst reckons the Premiership title race will go right to the wire.

And the Dutchman is backing his old club to wreck Celtic’s bid for an historic 10 in a row - and usher in a new era of success at Ibrox.

Van Bronckhorst has seen enough desire in Steven Gerrard ’s side to convince him this can be their year as they look to end a decade of dominance in the east end of Glasgow.

The Dutch icon won back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000 during a three year spell in Scottish football.

Now boss at Chinese side Guangzhou the 45-year-old keeps a close eye on the Scottish game.

And after managing Feyenoord to their first title in 18 years back in his homeland in 2017, van Bronckhurst reckons the elation felt in Rotterdam on that occasion would be mirrored if Rangers can end their long wait for the league championship in May

Gerrard’s side are nine points clear at the top having played two games more than Celtic.

And van Bronckhorst said: “There will be a big feeling of relief if Rangers manage to win the title this season.

“It has been too long for a club their size and it will have hurt watching Celtic have all their success over recent years.

“The first feeling I am sure will be relief – and then hopefully it becomes a new era of success.

“This can be their year that’s for sure. I think it will be a tight race – and will go down to the last few games.”
