Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela break their silence after Tottenham duo breach Covid-19 rules

Tottenham Hotspur duo Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela have both issued apologies for breaching coronavirus lockdown rules over the Christmas and New Year period.

On Saturday morning, ahead of Spurs' 3-0 win over Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it emerged that the Argentine duo, alongside left-back Sergio Reguilon, had been pictured breaking coronavirus guidelines by gathering with their families for a Christmas party.

As as well as those three being present at the event, they were also joined by West Ham United midfielder Manuel Lanzini.

Following the emergence of this news, Spurs soon issued a statement, confirming that they condemned the quartet's actions and would be dealing with the matter internally.

Tottenham: 2020 in review

The statement released by the north London outfit said: "We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image showing some of our players with family and friends together at Christmas particularly as we know the sacrifices everybody around the country made to stay safe over the festive period.

"The rules are clear, there are no exceptions, and we regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example.

"The matter will be dealt with internally."

Summer signing Reguilon was named on the bench for this lunchtime's clash with Leeds but Lamela was not included - Lo Celso is currently sidelined through injury.

Now, Lamela has issued a short statement on social media, insisting he apologises for his actions is aware that he has "let people down."

On Twitter, the winger wrote: "I want to apologise for a decision I made over Christmas which I deeply regret. On reflection I understand the seriousness of my actions and the impact it has on others.

" I am truly thankful to everyone working hard to keep us safe and I feel ashamed knowing I’ve let people down."

Fellow countryman Lo Celso has also taken to Twitter to apologise for attending the party.

"I want to apologise to everyone - I understand the great sacrifices people are making to keep themselves and loved ones safe and the frustration you have expressed towards me is justified," said Lo Celso.

"I take responsibility for my actions, which I genuinely regret. I also wish to express my gratitude to all those working so hard to keep us all safe and will do everything I can to set a better example in the future."

Currently, coronavirus infection rates are soaring in England, particularly in the south of the country, with over 57,000 new cases of the virus reported on Saturday.
