Gio van Bronckhorst quashes Rangers' AFCON fears as he takes emphatic stance on Celtic clash

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has declared Rangers stars bound for the Africa Cup of Nations are going nowhere before a derby date with Celtic.

With the international tournament set to begin on January 9, there was concern Rangers' Nigerian players Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun would be called up before the trip to Celtic Park on January 2.

Rumours that the AFCON - to be held in Cameroon - could be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic earlier this week were later dismissed and Rangers fans have been awaiting clarification over a key trio.

But Van Bronckhorst appears to have put the matter to bed as he took an emphatic stance on Friday.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's meeting with Dundee United, the Ibrox boss said: "Any players representing at the Africa Cup of Nations will be here for the Old Firm match before being released."

The tournament is set to run until February 6, with Scottish football shutting down for a winter break between January 3 and 21.
