Gio van Bronckhorst delivers Rangers injury boost on Filip Helander as Jermain Defoe talked up for 'important role'

Gio van Bronckhorst is hoping to see Filip Helander back on the training pitch by Christmas.

But he reckons his Rangers squad is strong enough to cope with a few bumps and bruises.

The Dutchman spoke to the press ahead of Wednesday's clash with Hibs and confirmed no new problems, with Kemar Roofe the only uncertainty ahead of the visit to Easter Road.

And less than two weeks after watching Hibs eliminated them at Hampden, van Bronckhorst knows he's in for a tight game in Leith.

He said: "We have no fresh injuries, nothing important to report. Hopefully, Kemar Roofe comes through on Wednesday and can hopefully be part of the squad.

"It will be a difficult game on Wednesday, we will have a different style from the last match but we will look back at the threats Hibs have. Wednesday is a new chance to get the three points.

"We have a big squad with a lot of different qualities and strengths. To be dynamic and change the system is very important in modern football.

"I am very happy with the balance in the squad and we will prepare every game differently for each challenge."

He was asked for an update on Helander, who hasn't been seen since September as he recovers from a knee problem.

And the verdict was largely optimistic - though he urged caution with the Sweden defender.

He said: "Filip Helander is outside on the pitch again and we are slowly bringing him back to fitness levels. Hopefully, we see him return to training in December."

And the boss also had some kind words for Jermain Defoe who is expected to play an "important role" - both on the pitch and off it.

He said: "Defoe has been really good, he is always thinking about team process and tactical possibilities. He is still a top player and the quality he has is needed in games.

"He will still have an important role in this season."
