Gio van Bronckhorst defends Rangers involvement in Sydney Super Cup as he hails 'terrific opportunity' Down Under

Gio van Bronckhorst says it's a "terrific opportunity" for Rangers to travel to take part in the Sydney Super Cup in November.

The Ibrox side confirmed their involvement on Wednesday and they'll join Celtic in the mini-tournament which also involves Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.

There has been significant backlash from fans since the A-League announced the Premiership sides' involvement with both Rangers and Celtic supporters voicing their displeasure.

But a statement from Rangers confirmed they will be taking part in the friendly competition which runs in tandem with the Qatar World Cup.

Ibrox commercial director James Bisgrove insisted in spite of fan protests that the trip will rake in a major financial windfall.

And manager Van Bronckhorst echoed that sentiment claiming it's a "terrific opportunity" from a football perspective.

He said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to take Rangers to Sydney next November.

"I know from my previous spell at the club as a player that we have supporters based all around the world, with Australia a particular hotbed for Rangers fans.

"This is a terrific opportunity for us to go and see them in person, as well as get some valuable game time for the players who won't be at the World Cup against a good challenge in Western Sydney Wanderers and also the Old Firm match."
