Gio van Bronckhorst and his Rangers backroom thinking revealed as former Ibrox boss rules out Jan Wouters

Alex McLeish would love to see Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the Rangers dugout.

But he knows for a fact Jan Wouters won't be alongside him after a text exchange with his and Dick Advocaat's old assistant.

Van Bronckhorst inherited Wouters, 61, as his assistant at Feyenoord and worked with him for the entirety of his De Kuip reign.

The former Barcelona and Arsenal man held talks with Ibrox decision makers in London this weekend to replace Steven Gerrard, who left for Aston Villa on Thursday morning.

Reuniting with Wouters seemed an obvious move but McLeish posed the Rangers question and it seems Wouters isn't interested.

His long coaching career has seen him rock up at Ajax, PSV and Utrecht in his homeland along with Gers and also Turkish side Kasimpasa.

So it's understandable if he's not all that keen on returning to another high-octane sideline as McLeish, speaking to BBC Sportsound, revealed: “They need a young, vibrant manager, and Giovanni has some good experience.

“Jan Wouters will testify to that.

“I was actually texting him today and said, ‘are we going to be seeing you in Glasgow again?’

“He played dumb so I’m taking it he’s not coming and Giovanni has moved on.

“Jan maybe feels he’s done his bit in the game. That’s all the inside information I can give you!

“He says, ‘not for me’, so we’ll see.”
