An entrance ceremony for first-graders was held on Friday at Taimei Elementary School -- which has introduced an Armani-designed voluntary standard uniform -- in Chuo Ward, Tokyo.
All 55 first-graders at the ceremony were wearing the uniform, which costs up to about 80,000 yen.
The school principal's decision to replace the old uniform with an Armani uniform stirred controversy when the high price was reported earlier this year.
Entrance ceremonies were held on Friday at 1,259 public elementary schools, including Taimei, which is about 90 percent of the total in Tokyo. About 98,000 first-graders enrolled.
