Gini Wijnaldum sends new message as he prepares for Liverpool transfer exit

Departing Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has offered his thanks to all the messages he’s received since he confirmed he will quit Anfield this summer.

The Dutch international midfielder has made 236 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 22 goals since he joined for £23million from Newcastle United in 2016, helping them to win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League title.

However, before Sunday’s 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace, which secured Champions League qualification for next season with a third place finish, he announced that he will not be staying once his five-year contract expires on June 30.

Taking to social media, the 30-year-old told his 1.5million Twitter followers: “What an emotional rollercoaster the last few days.

“I’ve received so many great messages from fans, players and friends all over the world. Thank you all so much.”

Wijnaldum looks to be closing in on a Bosman-style free transfer move to Barcelona with his agent, Humphry Nijman, and legal adviser, Jan Kabalt, arriving at the Camp Nou on Tuesday to open talks over a three-year deal.
