Gini Wijnaldum says Champions League win made him realise how big a club Liverpool are

Gini Wijnaldum has explained how Liverpool's Champions League final win last month brought home the true size of the club he represents.

The midfielder revealed he was inundated with messages of congratulations during his holiday period after helping the Reds to the European Cup last season.

The Dutchman was one of Jurgen Klopp's most trusted lieutenants in the Reds' midfield, making 47 appearances in all competitions, including 12 in Europe's premier tournament.

Wijnaldum played 62 minutes in the Champions League final last month as the Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano to lift his first piece of silverware as a Liverpool player.

Following his exploits in Madrid with the Reds on June 1, Wijnaldum was whisked off to international duty with Holland where they were beaten 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League final in Portugal.

The Dutch international was then afforded around three weeks off to rest and recharge ahead of another long campaign with Jurgen Klopp's Reds and Wijnaldum has said the club's worldwide fanbase have continued to support him during his break away from the game.

He told Liverpoolfc.com : "It’s a really big club. Everywhere you go people know Liverpool .

"On my vacation a lot of people came to me and congratulated me for the Champions League.

“Sometimes you don’t realise how big the club is; the club is in Europe but even when you travel abroad to Asia or America you see how big this club is because a lot of people support Liverpool and a lot of people know the club."

Wijnaldum also stated that the Reds' sixth European Cup triumph - and subsequent celebrations that followed - have only heightened his desire to bring more silverware to Anfield this coming campaign.

“Because I know how it feels right now, I want it again,” he added. "That’s why I came back hungry, the guys also came back hungry to achieve even more.

“It’s a good feeling and it’s the feeling you want to get used to, winning trophies like that. That’s why everyone is hungry to do even better this year and win more.”

Wijnaldum returned to Liverpool training over the weekend but was not involved on Sunday as the Reds beat Bradford City 3-1 at Valley Parade.

James Milner scored twice before Rhian Brewster made it 3-0 in the first half prior to a late penalty from Eoin Doyle.
