Gini Wijnaldum's Barcelona transfer in doubt as rival emerges for midfield spot

Barcelona may opt the abandon their pursuit of Georginio Wijnaldum and promote youth star Ilaix Moriba.

The Spanish side's squad is bursting with young stars such as Ansu Fati, Pedri and Francisco Trincão.

Moriba could be the next man to make himself a regular as the Catalans consider promoting him to the first team

That could put an end to any hopes Wijnaldum has of moving to the Nou Camp as his Liverpool contract winds down.

Ronald Koeman has been linked with a reunion with the midfielder having worked with him whilst in charge of the Netherlands.

Talks have been held over a free transfer, but the latest financial audit, which showed doubts of over £1bn, has put the move in doubt.

Laporta's new officials are now discussing whether to promote the 18-year-old Moriba following his impressive breakthrough this season, reports Sky Sports.

Wijnaldum could therefore be left to pursue other options with Inter Milan and Wolves previously linked with the Dutchman.

The 30-year-old, who has won the Premier League and Champions League at Anfield, recently opened up on his Liverpool future.

“There is no news as it is right now,” he said. “I would like if i come with news, all I can say is I'm really happy with the club, with the team, staff and the fans for who I play.

"It is not that I'm not happy or that I have to leave or something like that.

“It's not as easy as everyone thinks it is to make some decisions about your future, you have to think about everything and then first negotiate with the clubs and it's so difficult and it's why it takes so long.

"Also I think the situation we're in right now means its not the most important thing.

“That is getting back on track and winning games and then we will see. I'm happy with the fans, the team, the staff, beside that there is no news.”
