Gini Wijnaldum responds to Barcelona transfer speculation and reiterates Liverpool point

Gini Wijnaldum has reiterated his stance of ‘no news’ with regards to his contract situation at Liverpool.

The Dutchman’s future continues to dominate the headlines, with his current deal at Anfield due to expire in the coming months.

As of yet there has been no development of an extension on his five-year stay on Merseyside thus far, leading to increased speculation that he is likely to depart this summer.

Reports surfaced over the weekend claiming that an agreement had been reached with Barcelona over a transfer to the Nou Camp as a free agent upon the expiration of his contract at Liverpool.

However, reports in Spain soon moved to dismiss those rumours, with sources from the La Liga club denying that an agreement was in place.

The ECHO understands that Wijnaldum has not made those intentions known to Liverpool and the club are unaware of any deal with Barca.

Wijnaldum has refused to be drawn on speculation surrounding his future when asked in the past, and it’s the same again now.

The 30-year-old was today on press conference duty for the Netherlands national team, and has been asked about his future and the reported ‘agreement’ with Barcelona.

“They will always talk about these things but as I’ve said on other occasions, I have no news still,” Wijnaldum told Dutch channel NOS.

Before he added: “They say this in the media but I have no news. When there is I will talk about it, but there isn’t.

“I’m here now to talk about the games against Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar.”
