Gini Wijnaldum message explained after Liverpool midfielder key to Premier League win

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has shared a congratulatory message he was given by airline staff when flying back home to his native Netherlands.

The 29-year-old helped the Reds to end their Premier League title-winning season with a 3-1 victory at his former club Newcastle United on Sunday as he returned to his old stomping ground of St James’ Park.

Wijnaldum, who featured in 47 Liverpool matches this term – including all but one of their Premier League games – completed the full 90 minutes as Jurgen Klopp’s men recovered from conceding after just 25 seconds to secure the three points that took their final total to a club record 99.

Taking to social media, Wijnaldum showed a photograph to his Twitter followers of a handwritten note placed in KLM Europe Business Class bag, dated today.

The message, in Dutch, translates as: “Dear Mr Wijnaldum,

“Great to welcome you on board once again at this time. The crew would like to congratulate you on winning the 2020 title with Liverpool.

“Kind regards, Crew KLM 1070 MAN-AMS.”

A nice touch, and it’s fair to say that Wijnaldum and the rest of the side that brought the League Championship back to Anfield for the first time in 30 years have been flying all season – on the pitch at least.
