Gini Wijnaldum makes Real Madrid declaration as Liverpool 'addiction' takes hold

Gini Wijnaldum wants Liverpool to emulate Real Madrid's Champions League dynasty as he explained the 'addictive' nature of winning silverware.

The Reds earned their sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in June, sparking wild scenes of celebration in Liverpool the following day during the victory parade.

Real Madrid's reign as champions had been ended earlier in the competition having won the previous three years, including a 3-1 success over Liverpool in the final in 2018.

And Wijnaldum is eager for Jurgen Klopp's side to build on their triumph in the Wanda Metropolitano.

"I really wanted to win the Champions League once," said the Liverpool midfielder. "Now I want it more often.

"Look at Real Madrid: three times in a row. I would like something like that.

Blood Red: Should Gini Wijnaldum play further forward for Liverpool?

"Especially since we have seen what it does with the city, with your career and with the club. That is addictive."

Speaking to de Volkskrant, Wijnaldum added: "What does it do with the city? I think you've seen that tour through the city.

"(Winning the Champions League) is just a very nice feeling when you think back. It is a prize that is very difficult to win."

Liverpool are second in their Champions League group having followed a 2-0 defeat at Napoli with a thrilling 4-3 home triumph over RB Salzburg.

Wijnaldum is currently on international duty with Holland, who host Northern Ireland on Thursday and travel to Belarus on Sunday in their latest Euro 2020 qualifiers.
