Gini Wijnaldum lifts lid on Barcelona transfer interest and addresses Liverpool future

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has downplayed interest from Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

WIjnaldum, 29, is out of contract at Anfield next summer and is yet to commit his long-term future to the club.

He was linked with a Barcelona move when Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman took charge the Nou Camp and reportedly made him a priority target.

Speculation was renewed when Thiago Alcantara arrived to bump Wijnaldum further down the pecking order.

But a move never materialised before the transfer deadline passed on Monday - and Wijnaldum has now addressed his summer of uncertainty.

Speaking ahead of the Netherlands’ clash with Mexico this week, the midfielder claimed interest from Barcelona was never particularly significant.

And he stated he will most likely see out his contract at Anfield but gave no indication of whether he will extend his stay.

Wijnaldum said: "I don’t think [the Barcelona interest] was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

"There was nothing concrete. I didn’t have to think about it.

"I will stay on [with Liverpool] it looks like now. My contract will run for another 10 months.

"It could still change, of course you never know that in football. So we'll see.”

Asked about Wijnaldum’s future last month, manager Klopp said.

He said: “It’s all good with Gini. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved. I can’t speak about a few years, but it’s all good for the moment.

“You know the situation – between me, Gini and the club, everything is fine.

“Since Gini is here I have had 500 or 600 talks with him. Of course I’ve spoken to him since he came back from international duty. But that’s all.”
