Gini Wijnaldum explains how James Milner makes things "really tough" at Liverpool

James Milner may not be the first name on Liverpool's team sheet or even a regular starter - but he has been hailed as 'unbelievable' by teammate Georginio Wijnaldum.

Milner has proved himself to be ultra dependable whenever called upon by Jurgen Klopp to fill a variety of roles during Liverpool's rise to the top in recent years.

The 34-year-old can play in th centre of midfield, at left-back and on the left of midfield when needed - and has been a vital part of the Reds' treble trophy triumph and their charge to the brink of being crowned Premier League champions.

But his impact on the Reds' extends far beyond the pitch.

As well as offering an invaluable winners' mentality from two title-winning campaigns with Manchester City, Milner also has years of experience with former clubs Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Leeds.

He is also renowned for his relentless running and fitness levels - and gives his teammates a tough time in training every day, according to his midfield colleague Wiljnaldum.

And the Dutch midfielder says Milner is constantly keeping his teammates on their toes as Liverpool prepare to resume their title quest away in the Goodison Park derby against Everton a week on Sunday.

"The engine that guy has, it's unbelievable," Wijnaldum told the Football Show on Sky Sports.

"I see it in games and in training. He's non-stop [in training]. When you play against him it's really tough.

"He never stops giving everything, so you have to be 100 per cent concentrated otherwise you will lose to him."

Meanhile, Liverpool have reportedly had a breakthrough in contract talks with Wijnaldum and now expect the midfielder to commit his future to the club.

The 29-year-old's current deal is due to expire next summer and there were suggestions he could see out his contract before leaving on a free transfer.

But The Guardian reports Liverpool have held "positive talks" with Wijnaldum over an extension which would keep him at the club until either 2024 or 2025, and the player is expected to sign over the coming weeks.
