Activist Gina Martin, who successfully campaigned to make upskirting a criminal offence, says there is “such a low bar” for what women expect in the bedroom.
Speaking on The Independent’s dating and relationships podcast, “Millennial Love”, Martin explained this is because there is “so much that comes before your pleasure”.
“There [are] so many different things we worry about and there’s such a low bar for what we expect in the bedroom,” Martin said.
The 25-year-old went on to tout the benefits of sex and communication, describing the two as “mutually exclusive”.
Martin spoke on the podcast alongside writer and author of How to have Feminist Sex, Flo Perry.
Perry agreed that communication is paramount to a healthy relationship, adding that a fear of being single can sometimes lead women to settle for less than they want or need in the bedroom.
“We’re so scared of being single that once you have the boyfriend or the girlfriend, you don’t think, ‘Is this the sex I want to be having?' You don’t prioritise your own pleasure. I think a lot of women especially do that,” she said.
Elsewhere in the episode, the duo discuss the ways in which #MeToo has been framed as a “witch hunt” for men by critics of the movement.
“The witch hunt thing is really interesting,” says Martin.
“Yes we’re hunting men who are abusing women. So yeh, it is [a witch hunt], as it should be. Like, that’s not a bad thing that we’re trying to find these men that have been doing things to women and trying to deconstruct this culture that has been hurting people for so long.”
