Edward Herrmann, the award-winning actor best known for his roles in The Lost Boys and Gilmore Girls, has died aged 71, according to his manager.

Herrmann had been diagnosed with brain cancer and was in an intensive care in a New York City hospital before his death on Wednesday morning.

“Having valiantly braved months of treatment for brain cancer, Edward Herrmann passed peacefully at 8.30am today at Sloan Kettering hospital in New York City,” his manager Robyn Stecher said in a statement.

He won an Emmy in 1999 for a guest appearance on The Practice, but is perhaps best known as Richard Gilmore, the patriarch from the long-running teen drama, Gilmore Girls.

Herrmann also starred in Joel Schumacher’s teen vampire film, The Lost Boys, alongside Kiefer Sutherland, where he played Max. He also recently appeared on shows including Grey’s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother and The Good Wife.
