Gillingham sound out AFC Wimbledon assistant boss Glyn Hodges in new manager search

AFC Wimbledon risk losing one half of the coaching team that has guided them to the cusp of League One safety after assistant manager Glyn Hodges emerged as a candidate for the Gillingham job.

Alongside manager Wally Downes, Hodges has helped transform Wimbledon since the pair were hired in December.

The Dons were 23rd in League One and seven points from safety when they were brought in, but have managed to turn things around.

Wimbledon are 19th and two points clear of the relegation places with one game left to play, while earlier this season they went on a run to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

However, the Dons are at risk of losing Hodges because he has emerged as a contender for the vacant managerial role at Gillingham.

The League One side sacked manager Steve Lovell last week and Mark Patterson will be caretaker boss for the final game of the season after overseeing Saturday’s loss to Charlton.

Hodges has been sounded out to take charge in the summer with the Gills eager to speak to a number of candidates about the role.

Hodges has previously worked as a number one at Barnsley, before taking up coaching roles with Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City, QPR and Stoke City.
