Gillian Rolton's legacy honoured with state funeral

A state funeral will be held in Adelaide next week for equestrian great Gillian Rolton, who died of cancer at the weekend.

The 61-year-old dual Olympic gold medallist became a sporting legend after continuing to ride to glory at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games despite breaking her collarbone and ribs.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, at Victoria Park — the location of the International Three Day Event, which she ran for 10 years.

Her death came after a two-year fight with endometrial cancer and in the middle of the three-day event.

Premier Jay Weatherill said Rolton's achievements both on and off the track deserved to be honoured with a state funeral.

Long-time friend Felicity-Ann Lewis said it was fitting that the state funeral would take place at Victoria Park.

"It's a place that she's spent many hours at pacing around, walking the course relentlessly over those 20 years of involvement and 10 years as the director," Ms Lewis said.

"I think she would have been chuffed and I guess humbled that there has been such an outpouring of grief and acknowledgement of the many phases of contribution that she's made."
