Gillian Anderson and Peter Morgan have split up after four years together, it is understood.

The couple, who had been together since 2016, recently worked together on season four of The Crown, which Morgan wrote and Anderson starred in, playing the role of Margaret Thatcher.

While neither Anderson nor Morgan have publicly commented on the split, it has been reported that the relationship “had run its course”.

Morgan was previously married to Lila Schwarzenberg and has five children with her.

Meanwhile, Anderson has one daughter, Piper, 26, with her ex-husband Clyde Klotz, and two sons, Oscar, 14, and Felix, 12, with her ex-partner Mark Griffiths.

Despite the split, Anderson and Morgan remain “great friends”, the Daily Mail reports.

The news comes after Anderson spoke about the complexities of working alongside Morgan on The Crown.

Recalling being on set in full costume in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she said: “I smiled at [Morgan], as me, Gillian, smiling at her boyfriend, and he said, ‘This is Thatcher! This smile is Thatcher!’... And I’m like, no! This smile is me!’”

Anderson went on to say that the couple tried their best to keep things professional.

“For our own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries,” she said.

“I am not going to comment on the script, but you are not allowed to comment on the performance!”

The Independent has contacted a representative for Morgan for comment.
