Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann faces sentencing after admitting to eight murders

  • Rex Heuermann , a Long Island architect, is scheduled for sentencing on Wednesday in Riverhead, New York, after admitting to the murders of eight women.
  • Heuermann pleaded guilty in April to killing seven women—Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla—and also confessed to the murder of Karen Vergata.
  • The victims, many of whom were sex workers, were strangled by Heuermann, who dismembered some of their remains, with most disappearing between 2000 and 2010, and their bodies found along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach.
  • The investigation, which began in 2010 and went cold before being reopened in 2022, linked Heuermann to the crimes through a pickup truck, DNA evidence from a discarded pizza crust, and cellphone data.
  • Heuermann has been held at the Suffolk County Jail since his 2023 arrest and will be transferred to a state prison following his sentencing, which marks the conclusion of a high-profile cold case.
