Gigs return to The Boarding House venue in Howwood

Singer Tom Robinson and musician Bobby Motherwell are looking forward to seeing the return of live gigs at a village venue this month.

Tom recommending Bobby’s gigs at The Boarding House to friend Elvis Costello on Twitter in a bid to get him to play in Scotland.

Bobby is the organiser of intimate gigs at The Boarding House that support new Scottish talent and some big names in the music industry, from Rab Noakes and Jill Jackson to Tom Robinson and James Grant.

Bobby said: “The return of the gigs was prompted by a call and a tweet from the British Singer Tom Robinson who champions the work of new emerging artists to his mate Elvis Costello.

"I was in London and tweeted that I was going to see Elvis Costello at Hammersmith in London and then to King Lear at the Globe.

“Elvis Costello responded to my tweet hoping that I could “… tell the difference by the end of the night!...” and that he was “Honoured you are putting us on your dance card.”

After seeing the two singers interact, fans and regulars of the Boarding House begged Elvis to come and perform in Renfrewshire.

Bobby, who lives in the village, added: “Friends, family and venue regulars at The Boarding House, noticing Elvis’ response to me then piled on asking and pleading him to come play at our wee venue.

“Then, Tom joined the conversation and recommended the venue to Elvis, tweeting “Hey Elvis – yes I can definitely recommend The Boarding House – Bobby runs a tight ship and looks after his guests regally.”

When covid struck, music and event venues had to close and now with the restrictions being eased, the industry is looking to get back into the swing of things and Bobby is hoping that this can get everything in motion once again.

He said: "This is still an incredibly difficult time in the recovery of live music. We need fans to buy tickets and attend live gigs as they offer a vital lifeline to the music industry and in bringing fans and musicians together."

Live gigs coming up include: Dean Owens with special guest Kirsten Adamson on Friday, September 9. Doors at 7.30pm; The ABBA Tribute Brunch with music from tribute band Voyage on Sunday, September 25. Doors at 11am and Paisley Americana singer Jill Jackson on Sunday, November. Doors at 7.30pm. Full details are on the venue's Facebook page.
