GIFU -- A craftsman puts the finishing touches on a mizu uchiwa round fan at Sumii Tomijiro Shoten, a specialist shop in Gifu City, ahead of the full-fledged onset of summer. Made by pasting thin washi paper onto a bamboo frame, the traditional fans are decorated in summery patterns, such as morning glories and goldfish, and then given a coat of varnish to create a delicate, translucent appearance that is highly popular among tourists and locals alike. Over 300 of the handmade mizu uchiwa fans will be crafted this year for sale both in the shop and online.
