Gifts for the goddess

Priests craft imitation camellias in preparation for a Shunie ritual known as Omizutori, to be held from Friday in Nara at Todaiji temple's Nigatsudo hall. Sitting in a circle, the priests made about 400 of the flowers using Japanese angelica tree wood with red and white washi paper. They will be offered to the hall's principal Buddhist statues during the ritual.
