Gifted youngster snaps up national photography award for striking images

Talented young photographer Macey MacLennan proved to be picture perfect as she snapped up a national photography award.

Her striking image of derelict premises at Bank Street in Coatbridge, entitled Closed For Business, won the primary category of the annual My Place photo competition run by the Scottish Civic Trust.

Glenboig Primary pupil Macey won a camera and accessories plus a framed certificate and a canvas of her picture, meeting communities secretary Aileen Campbell MSP at a presentation ceremony.

Judges said of her winning photograph: “The subject is terrific – it represents a layering of our past and observes something many would walk past.

“It shows a sensitivity and curiosity about their surroundings for this primary pupil to notice the post-industrial decline as part of their heritage, part of their story.”

Winning photographer Macey said: “I was speechless when I heard that I had won, it was so unexpected.

“I am very pleased, excited and proud of myself.”

More than 400 pupils aged between five and 18 entered the contest, with Macey’s entry among those being displayed at The Lighthouse in Glasgow for the next month.
