Giants will have their chance to chase Kenny Golladay

The Detroit Lions chose to bypass placing the franchise tag on star wide receiver Kenny Golladay on Tuesday, sending him into the unrestricted free agent pool next week.

There will be many teams vying for the 6-foot-4, 215-pound former Pro Bowler’s services and the New York Giants will likely be one of them.

That doesn’t mean they’ll land him. They don’t have the financial bandwidth to get into any bidding wars at the moment as they will likely use most of their cap space trying to pay their own free agents, specifically Leonard Williams and Dalvin Tomlinson.

Joe Giglio of NJ Advance Media predicts the 27-year-old Golladay will sign on with the New England Patriots, a team that has brought in many a wayward wideout in the past.

Golladay can be considered ‘wayward’ because hamstring and hip injuries limited him to just five games in 2020 after leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns in his Pro Bowl season of 2019.

That doesn’t mean the Giants won’t go down swinging. They had the 31st-ranked offense in 2019 and are seeking to add playmakers, especially tall, long receivers like Golliday.

They can’t afford to overpay however, so Giglio might be right about Golliday choosing the Pats over other teams with less money and lesser reputations.
