Giants will be first MLB team to wear Pride colors in on-field uniform

The Giants announced Tuesday they will become the first MLB team to incorporate Pride colors into their on-field uniforms when they face the Chicago Cubs on Saturday at Oracle Park.

Players and coaches will wear jerseys that feature an SF logo “Pride Patch” on their right sleeves and caps that incorporate the Pride colors into the SF logo.

“We are extremely proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community as we kick off one of the best annual celebrations in San Francisco by paying honor to the countless achievements and contributions of all those who identify as LGBTQ+ and are allies of the LGBTQ+ community,” Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement released by the team.

Saturday’s game against the Cubs is “Pride Day,” at the ballpark as the organization is selling special event tickets that include an SF Pride T-shirt. The organization says proceeds from each special event ticket sold for Saturday’s game will be donated to San Francisco Pride.

The Giants are also planning several other festivities to celebrate Pride Day as the franchise will honor former San Francisco supervisor and state assembly member Tom Ammiano before the game. Ammiano was also the first openly gay teacher in San Francisco.

The Giants will also have a pregame ceremonial raising of the Pride Flag by cofounders and members of the San Francisco Transgender Cultural District.

The palm trees in Willie Mays Plaza will be wrapped in the 11 colors of the Pride Flag on Saturday.

During the Giants’ next road trip, the team is also holding Pride movie nights on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12. The Giants will screen “In the Heights” on June 11 and screen “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” on June 12.
