Giants warned to avoid WR Mike Evans in free agency

Future Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans has been listed as a player the New York Giants should avoid during the upcoming free agency period, per Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox.

Knox also lists Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler and Miami Dolphins guard Connor Williams as two other players the Giants should steer clear of.

Evans will turn 31 in August and could hit the dreaded cliff at any time. He’s also going to be one of the priciest options in free agency, with a projected market value of $23.8 million annually.

While the Giants might be able to sign Evans on a back-loaded contract, but they would likely have to overpay to do it. At this stage in his career, Evans likely wants no part of an uncertain quarterback situation like New York’s.

The Giants aren’t close enough to title contention to consider overpaying for a receiver who may or may not still be elite in a year or two. New York would be better served by targeting complementary receivers in free agency and seeking a new No. 1 target in April’s draft.

Very true. The Giants are in need of a playmaking wideout but are better off finding and developing their own stud through the draft. They hold the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NFL draft and there will be quite a few wideouts to choose from.

With limited cap space to deal with (approximately $35-37 million), the Giants will have to do a little bargain rack shopping this offseason in free agency.

Evans would not be a wise investment for a team that has so many needs and is not one or two players away from the Super Bowl. Plus, who even knows if Evans — who has played his entire 10-year NFL career with Tampa — would be interested in uprooting his life to play under the microscope in a big market such as New York.
