Giants waive running back Robert Martin

One day removed from signing veteran running back Rod Smith, the New York Giants have announced that they’ve waived sophomore running back Robert Martin is a rather surprising move.

The Giants originally signed Martin as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers University after the 5-foot-11, 207-pound back impressed during rookie minicamp in 2018.

Martin, who rushed for 2,274 yards and 18 touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry in college, ended up spending his entire rookie season on the Giants’ practice squad after being waived to make room for linebacker Nate Stupar on the 53-man roster.

Even with Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman leading the way, many had assumed the Giants had a role in store for Martin, who flashed at times during the preseason a year ago.

With Martin now gone, the Giants’ running back room consists of the aforementioned Barkley, Gallman and Smith, as well as Paul Perkins, Jonathan Hilliman and Eli Penny (fullback).
