Giants waive QB Alex Tanney, add RB Austin Walter from practice squad

With star running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) still not ready to return and Wayne Gallman out this week due to a concussion, the New York Giants promoted running back Austin Walter from their practice squad.

To make room for Walter, third-string quarterback Alex Tanney was waived.

Walter (5-foot-8, 202 pounds) was signed to the Giants’ practice squad on September 18. An undrafted free agent out of Rice, Walter spent the summer with the San Francisco 49ers at their training camp. He was waived at the roster deadline.

Walter averaged 5.1 yards per rush at Rice and caught 79 passes in his college career. He can also return kicks if needed. He is not likely here for long with Barkley and Gallman due back before the Giants play the Arizona Cardinals at home on Oct. 20.

As stated above, Tanney could be brought back as early as Monday as the Giants see him as an important part of their locker room.
