Giants waive Garrett Dickerson, promote Devante Downs from practice squad

The New York Giants tweaked their roster a bit on Tuesday morning, parting ways with one of their many tight ends, while adding a linebacker from their practice squad.

Garrett Dickerson drew the short straw and was sent packing, leaving Big Blue with Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison and Kadem Smith as their depth at the position.

Meanwhile, Devante Downs was promoted from team’s practice squad to add depth at the linebacker position with Lorenzo Carter (ankle) a little banged up following a Week 7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

After an impressive training camp, Dickerson appeared poised to take on an important role for the Giants on offense, but he was injured over the first few weeks of the season and then found himself falling further and further down their depth chart.

Through seven weeks, Dickerson did not draw even a single target.

Downs was a seventh-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFL Draft, but found himself released in late September and signed to the Giants practice squad in early November.

In 13 career games, Downs has recorded three tackles.
