Giants vs. Vikings: Statistics, numbers and broken records

The New York Giants fell to 2-3 on the season with a 28-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, and while the defeat has ushered in some negative feelings, there were a lot of positives to take away in Week 5.

We’ll get to all of that over the next 24-48 hours, but for now, it’s time to pour over some numbers.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some hand-picked statistics, interesting numbers and records that were established during Sunday’s game:

  • The Giants punted on their opening offensive drive for the first time this season. Entering Week 5, they had been the only team to score on the first drive of each game.
  • Although the Giants converted on 50% of their third-down attempts in Week 5, they went 0-for-3 on fourth down.
  • Daniel Jones suffered the first defeat of his professional career and is now 2-1 on the season.
  • Rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton caught his first NFL touchdown — a 35-yard pass from Daniel Jones.
  • Defensive lineman R.J. McIntosh recorded his first career NFL sack with a takedown of Kirk Cousins on the game’s opening drive.
  • Rookie Oshane Ximines secured his first career start in place of OLB Lorenzo Carter, who was inactive due to a neck injury.
  • Safety Jabrill Peppers forced the first fumble of his three-year career when he knocked the ball out of the arms of Dalvin Cook, who appeared destined to score.
  • On the very next play, the Giants were stopped in the endzone for a safety. It was the first time a defense recorded a safety against the Giants since 2016 when Ereck Flowers was penalized for holding in the endzone (vs. Pittsburgh Steelers).
  • Corey Ballentine’s 52-yard second quarterback kick return was the longest return by a Giant since Dwayne Harris took one back 100 yards for a score in 2015.
