The New York Giants traded back into Round 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft, landing their third first-round pick of the night, which they used to select George defensive back Deandre Baker.
Given the team’s need at cornerback, targeting the position isn’t that surprising. However, giving up a major haul for the first cornerback of the night is likely to draw some ire.
Background
Baker attended Miami Northwestern Senior High School where he was an All-American Sprinter. On national signing day, many expected him to commit to Texas, but instead he chose Georgia, which came as a surprise to many.
In 36 career games, Baker recorded 116 tackles, four tackles for a loss, one sack, 23 passes defensed and seven interceptions.

How does Baker fit in with the Giants?
The Giants are relatively thin at the cornerback position behind Janoris Jenkins, the veteran, and Sam Beal, the essential rookie. And given Beal’s uncertainty, it’s always good to have options.
A bit undersized, it will be interesting to see how the Giants intend to use Baker, but it’s possible he takes over as their nickle corner or splits time with Beal on the outside.
