NEW YORK — Giants tight end Levine Toilolo tore his Achilles Wednesday night and was carted off midway through practice after going down on a far field.
Toilolo, 30, was seventh in Giants special teams snaps last season (153, 38%) and had five catches for 46 yards while logging 27% (275) of the offensive snaps.
He took a pay cut this offseason to stick around halfway through a two-year deal. The Giants reduced his salary from $2.95 million to $1.35 million, including $400,000 guaranteed.
Toilolo projected again as a veteran special teamer who could block in heavy offensive packages, slotted behind the injured Kyle Rudolph (foot), Evan Engram and Kaden Smith.
It wasn’t immediately clear how Toilolo had torn the Achilles on Wednesday. He’d been working with trainers and seemingly on a pitch count already early in camp.
Rudolph hasn’t been on the field with the team the past few days. He’s been rehabbing but had been on the field with trainers last week. Now it seems he’s getting work done inside the facility.
The Giants’ only healthy tight ends outside of Engram and Smith are Cole Hikutini, Nakia Griffin-Stewart and Wednesday signing Tommy Stevens (Mississippi State).
Rysen John is on the COVID-19 reserve list, and Kelvin Benjamin was released on the first day of camp.
