It’s becoming more and more clear what the New York Giants are planning to do in next week’s NFL Draft. They want to beef up their offensive line.
Giants general manager Dave Gettleman pretty much tipped his hand this week o a conference call with reporters. When asked why he didn’t add a starter at the offensive tackle position in free agency, he responded as such.
“Part of the unrestricted free agency piece is we are also looking at the draft, so you kind of marry the two. We felt with the depth of the tackle class in the draft, we just felt this was the best way for us to go,” Gettleman said.
In the process, Gettleman mentioned the signing of swing tackle Cam Fleming and the high hopes they are pinning on Nick Gates, but at the same time admitted that starting left tackle Nate Solder had a tough year in 2019.
In NFL.com’s latest mock draft, analyst Bucky Brooks is joining the number of experts that have the Giants taking a left tackle prospect with the fourth overall selection. Like many he is mocking Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs to the Giants.

The move makes sense either at No. 4 or a few spots down in the draft order should the Giants swing a trade with a team looking for quarterback such as Miami, who holds the No. 5 pick or the Los Angeles Chargers, who have the sixth pick.
