Giants still have faith in Daniel Jones, want to build around him

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones regressed in 2023 before being lost for the season with a torn ACL, which came shortly after the second major neck injury of his career.

Despite that, general manager Joe Schoen still maintains faith in Jones, whom he rewarded with a four-year, $160 million deal last offseason.

“Yes,” Schoen said bluntly when asked if he still had faith in Jones.

Although the injuries are a concern and will likely require the Giants to find a quarterback to operate the offense over the spring and early summer, Schoen still wants to continue building talent around DJ.

“Yes. It’s football, guys get hurt. You can’t always predict it,” Schoen said. “Hopefully he’ll be back for Week 1. Again, we don’t have a crystal ball here, but we’ll continue to build the team we see best.”

Still, Schoen admits, the Giants must prepare as if Jones isn’t going to be ready to start the season even though recent reports sound optimistic.

“We have to plan on Daniel Jones not being healthy at the start of next year, but hope for the best. That means bringing in another quarterback,” Schoen said.

That quarterback could come by way of the 2024 NFL draft or free agency. It could also come from within, with Schoen leaving the door open for a Tyrod Taylor return.

“It’s not out of the question Tyrod Taylor will be back,” he said.

However things shake out, one thing is clear: Schoen is very much a believer in Daniel Jones and when he’s healthy, he will be starting for the Giants regardless of who else populates the quarterback room.
