Giants ‘still evaluating’ Landon Collins contract

The Indianapolis Colts have an abundance of salary cap space this offseason to use in free agency but in order to add premier talent, some players must first become available.

In the case of New York Giants star safety Landon Collins, general manager Dave Gettleman said they are still in the process of evaluating the situation. This could mean that the likelihood of a franchise tag, which is still high, might not be a forgone conclusion.

“We’re still evaluating,” Gettleman told reporters at NFL Combine in Indy on Wednesday.

Collins is one of the best safeties in the league and arguably the best safety set to hit the market when the new league year begins March 13. He’d be a nice complement to Malik Hooker as Collins can play a deep half while also being a dominant force near the line of scrimmage.

Collins is still rehabbing from a torn labrum in his shoulder that forced him to end the season early. He’s been a Pro Bowler in three of his four years in the league.

The Giants have until March 5 to apply the franchise tag to Collins. Should they decide not to, the Colts should be waiting with a contract.
