The New York Giants are signing linebacker David Mayo to a three-year contract extension, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
Mayo, 26, was set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on Wednesday. The Giants got a deal done before the legal tampering period arrives on Monday afternoon. The figures of the deal are unknown right now.
Mayo played in all 16 games during the regular season while making 13 starts. He recorded 82 tackles (52 solo), 2.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss. Though the Giants had some struggles in the middle of the defense, Mayo played well considering and was a big contributor on special teams.
The former fifth-round pick played 57% of the defensive snaps and 58% of the team’s special teams snaps.
The Giants have a need at the linebacker position this offseason. Mayo provides some solid depth and special teams contributions, but Big Blue parted ways with veteran Alec Ogletree and Ryan Connelly is working his way back from a torn ACL he suffered early in 2019.
Mayo provides some nice depth in the middle of the defense and should be a regular contributor for the next few seasons.
