Giants select Jedrick Wills in latest Peter Schrager mock draft

Quarterback Joe Burrow, edge rusher Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah off the board, 1-2-3.

That’s how NFL Network’s Peter Schrager sees the 2020 NFL Draft beginning, but what about the New York Giants at No. 4 overall? With linebacker Isaiah Simmons and the top four offensive tackles still available, Schrager certainly had a lot to pick from.

In the end, he settled on Alabama’s Jedrick Wills.

Dave Gettleman’s never traded his first selection in an NFL draft. If things shake out the way they do here, he’ll be able to pick any of the top four offensive linemen in this year’s class. Joe Judge has a history with Alabama’s Nick Saban, who has spoken positively of Wills to coaches around the league. Multiple coaches have told me Wills is the guy who goes first.

As a refresher, here’s what our friends over at Draft Wire had to say about Wills:

A nasty, powerful blocker with ideal technique and intelligence for the offensive tackle position, Wills is a Day 1 starter who can make an immediate impact at either tackle spot. His well-rounded skill set and reliability as both a run blocker and a pass protector should have him drafted highly.

As tempting as it would be for general manager Dave Gettleman & Co. to take Simmons in Round 1, the team’s most-dire need still comes at offensive tackle, where they must improve or risk wasting key years for both quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.

Interestingly, with four quality tackles available, Gettleman could break the mold, trade back for the first time ever, acquire additional assets and still land one of the big four. Will he? He should.
