Giants select Clemson's Dexter Lawrence with No. 17 overall pick

The Giants took Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence with the No. 17 overall pick they received from Cleveland in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

Lawrence, 21, is a 6-4, 342-pound tank who adds the weight and run-stopping to the middle that James Bettcher's defense lost when GM Dave Gettleman traded Damon Harrison to Detroit at the middle of last season.

Lawrence had 131 tackles, including 18 for a loss, and 10 sacks, four passes defended, three fumble recoveries, one forced and an interception in three college seasons.

Lawrence was a five-star recruit coming out of high school. In his third and final season at Clemson he had 44 tackles, 7.5 for a loss, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups.

Lawrence was suspended for the Cotton Bowl and national championship game after testing positive for ostarine, a performance-enhancing drug. But Clemson rolled anyway and Lawrence has maintained he did not knowingly ingest the substance.
