Giants select A.J. Epenesa in latest Sporting News mock draft

When the New York Giants are put on the clock at the 2020 NFL Draft, there will be a plethora of needs that must be addressed. Chief among them? A quality linebacker, an edge rusher and a potential starter at offensive tackle.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen most mock drafts project the Giants landing wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, outside linebacker Isaiah Simmons, offensive tackle Andrew Thomas or offensive tackle Austin Jackson. However, Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News recently decided to take things in a different direction.

Yes, Iyer still has the Giants going after an edge rusher, but he’s thrust a new name into the mix.

4. New York Giants (4-12)

  • A.J. Epenesa, EDGE, Iowa

The Giants will miss out on the pass-rushing services of Young for general manager Dave Gettleman, but they can recover well here with another top-flight Big Ten prospect. Epenesa (6-6, 280 pounds) is a powerful, explosive, big-bodied player. He can push blockers out of the way to get to the quarterback and also stands up strong against the run. He confirmed his top-10 status with 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble against USC in the Holiday Bowl.

Here’s a quick look at what our friends at Draft Wire have to say about Epenesa:

One of the top players in the country, Epenesa looks to be a top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. His strength, technique, and leadership should make him one of the safer picks in this draft class as he does everything that a coach could want from a defensive end.

He had a fairly quiet start to the 2019 season, but all the traits from a technique standpoint are there on film. The only concern is if teams will be willing to overlook some athletic limitations in his game that may limit his upside. He should be a very good NFL player for a long time regardless.

What do you say, Giants fans? Would you be okay with Epenesa at No. 4, particularly with Simmons still on the board, or would this be a remote-throw for you?
